My insane reasoning behind Reidable.com
If your in the mood for the ramblings of a mad man, then you clicked the right link. I even opted to keep this link out of the main navigation and out of the blog (normally my ramblings will end up in the blog).
I’m assuming for the most part that by coming to this website you know my last name is Reid. So that part of Reidable makes sense. But it means more than that. In web design people often refer to the readability of a website.
Using my designer brain I thought it would be a fun way to combine the two, and I was originally going to name my company Vivid9, Reidable.
I went through a Self Employment Benefit program, and the person that was mentoring me at the time didn’t get what I was after with the name, and they thought I needed something a little better than Reidable. I was honestly heart broken and I spent days trying to figure out what my new company was going to be called.
You have to get a domain name to match (well, maybe not have to) and it needs to be catchy, short, and memorable. Hence my company name Vivid9 Web Design (it rhymes!), and the short url http://vivid9.com.
If at the time I would have mentioned all the reasons why readability in web design is important and that I actually practice it when creating designs, maybe I would convinced her it was an awesome name and she would have agreed.
Part of going through the program taught me I needed to focus on a certain demographic and to cater to that same demographic when creating my business plan and when actually implementing the new business. So that’s what I ended up, and am still doing.
Vivid9 is a small web design company that targets small businesses with between 1 – 10 employee’s who need a cost effective, easy to manage website. Just so you know, that is currently and still what Vivid9 does.
Web Design is awesome if you like to do it, I couldn’t be happier building websites for clients and helping them reach their goals, I do find it very rewarding. At the same time, I do more than just web design, and I also love doing those things, especially if it has to do with Photoshop!
I needed to have a site where I could put up my resume and all of my design work that isn’t just based on Web Design. Lots of times in the design world you get hired out on a contract or as a freelancer as well. Making money is a key factor in any business, and reidable.com is another opportunity to connect with others.
Is it silly to have two websites? I’m sure some would say yes, and lots would say no. This is more of a personal portfolio / resume site anyway and I think keeping my business focused on what it actually is, is important.
Sometimes large companies need individuals to be hired on contract work where you can take no credit for any of the work you did, as they need to put their company name on it for example. In these collaborative situations, this site works better.
